Between 1924 and 1930, King Alfonso XIII and Victoria Eugenie lived at the Palacio Real de Pedralbes. The palace was built between 1919 and 1924 by the architects Eusebi Bona and Francesc de Paula Nebot, exclusively for the monarchs to stay there when they visited Barcelona. After a recent in-depth restoration, the royal chambers are now open to the public: that is, Alfonso XIII's bedroom and Victoria Eugenie's waiting room. Even though Barcelona in the 1920s was already becoming more modern, as reflected by the construction of the Mies Van der Rohe pavilion in the 1929 Barcelona Exhibition, strolling through the Royal Chambers is like being absorbed by a rococo and historicist decoration which was adapted to the taste of a conservative aristocracy which was anchored in the past. They are shown to the public exactly as they were originally and they still retain the trace of the distinguished guests, King Alfonso XIII and his wife Victoria Eugenie.
