Situated in the southern part of the city, Sants-Montjuic is very diverse and so are its neighbourhoods. From the very populated areas of Sants, Hostafrancs and La Bordeta in the upper part of the district, above the famous street Gran Vía de las Corts Catalanes, to others such as the popular area of Poble-sec which is a rather small urban area limited by the mountain. Plaza Espanya is located in the biggest and oldest area of the Sants-Montjuic district known simply as Sants where Barcelona’s main train station Estación de Sants is also located.
Montjuic Mountain is a 137m peak that overlooks the modern port offering great views over the city. Montjuic is a fantastic cultural centre with a high concentration of tourist attractions such as the Palau Sant Jordi, the Museu National d'Art Catalunya (MNAC), the Archaeological Museum, the Fundació Joan Miró and the Ethnologic Museum. The Parc de les Arts Escèniques is the centre for the performing arts with the Ciutat del Teatre, the Teatre Grec and Barcelona Teatre Musical hosting a variety of events throughout the year. Plaza Espanya lies on the edge of the Montjuic mountain that was home of the International Exposition of 1929 in Barcelona and the Olympic Games in 1992. In the area you will find the Olympic Stadium, the Poble Espanyol and the castle of Montjuïc, a beautiful construction on the top of the mountain that now houses the Military Museum. The most characteristic image of Montjuïc is the night-time view from Plaça d'Espanya, with the Avinguda Reina Maria Cristina, the Magic Fountain and the Palau Nacional floodlit.
