Situated between Nou Barris, Sant Martí and Horta-Guinardó and delimited to the north by the river Besós, Sant Andreu is the third largest of Barcelona’s districts. It was annexed by Barcelona in 1897, but the historic town of Sant Andreu still retains a strong independent Catalan identity. This is a well established district combining industrial, commercial and residential areas with a good balance of amenities including theatres, parks with sporting facilities and two underground lines as well as several bus routes and two main line train station that link the area with the rest of the city
The seven barrios that together make up the district all have independent historic background which give Sant Andreu’s architecture a mixture of distinctive building styles, from early 19th century palazzos to avant-garde workers’ housing from the 1920s and 30s, to the inevitable apartment blocks from the 50s and 60s.
